Wayne E. Sliker – May 21, 1941-October 15, 2025
Wayne E. Sliker, 84, of rural St. Paris, Ohio, went home to our Lord after passing away on October 15, 2025, at Mercy Health Urbana Hospital. He entered this world on May 21, 1941, in Lebanon Township, New jersey, the second of five sons born to the late Wilbur & Louise (Gross) Sliker
Wayne is survived by his wife of 60 ½ years Connie (Freeman) Sliker; Son, Kevin (Ann) Sliker; brothers, Bruce Sliker, Trent (Donna) Sliker; granddaughter, Britny Sliker; special cousin, Linda Giorgianni, as well as 4 nieces and 6 nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brother Keith Sliker, sisters-in-law Viginia Sliker and Genevieve Sliker.
Leader, mentor, a man with high integrity, an avid youth supporter, and simply a class act who routinely went out of his way to encourage others are among the descriptives used by the people who encountered Wayne Sliker throughout his earthly life. With no farming background in his immediate family, Wayne’s interest in dairy took root during his freshman year of high school when he purchased his first Brown Swiss calf for his FFA project. As fate would have it, that calf eventually developed into his very first Excellent cow for his fledging Top Acres herd. That calf became the genesis for a 69-year career with the Brown Swiss breed that has become one for the record books.
Just as Wayne’s dairy career began to sprout, peers in his life were recognizing another trait Wayne’s leadership skills as his North Hunterdon Regional High School classmates elected him class president three of his four years of high school. As Wayne continued on his leadership journey, he was elected the high school’s Chapter FFA President and simultaneously served as the New Jersey State FFA Secretary. After graduating high school in 1959, Wayne was elected the New Jersey State FFA President.
It was during this era that this hard-working, young man fully embraced his passion for the dairy industry as he started milking 20 registered Brown Swiss on a rented farm near Port Murray, N.J. As this business adventure got rolling, 1962 became a whirlwind year as Wayne became the only New Jersey high school student to win the coveted American Farmer Degree and he joined 350 other individuals from across the country to receive that award at the National FFA Convention in Kansas City, Missouri.
Having won the state FFA judging contest that same year, Wayne earned a trip to the famed National Dairy Cattle Congress, in Waterloo, Iowa, which was the North America’s leading dairy show in that era. That turned out to be the trip of lifetime as Wayne was mentored by the legendary Vernon Hull, the 1941 Klussendorf winner who managed the world’s leading Brown Swiss herd … Lee’s Hill Farm. Hull saw something in Wayne and hired the young New Jersey native to travel by boxcar with the show herd that season. Fast forward through the years … those two gentlemen became perhaps the most recognized Brown Swiss breeders in the breeds history. In 2010, the Brown Swiss Cattle Breeders Association initiated two new awards where Hull became the very first Historical Master Breeder Award winner and Sliker would win the inaugural Active Master Breeder Award.
In 1963, while judging a New Jersey dairy show, Wayne met Connie Freeman. The couple married in 1965 Wayne, and the husband-wife duo developed a bond walking side-by-side developing the Top Acres herd. Connie eventually fed every Brown Swiss calf on their family farm ensuring the next generation got off to a great start. Looking to purchase a farm of their own, Wayne and Connie decided to head west and purchased their farm near St. Paris, Ohio, in 1974, where the Top Acres herd made its permanent home and rewrote the Brown Swiss history books.
All totaled, the Top Acres herd amassed 125 All-Americans and over 100 Reserve All Americans — both all-time records in the Brown Swiss breed. During that journey, Wayne and his Top Acres Team had earned 19 Grand Champion honors at National Brown Swiss Shows. At World Dairy Expo, North America’s premier Brown Swiss Show, the Top Acres herd amassed three Grand Champion Bulls, five Reserve Champion Cows, an Intermediate and Reserve Intermediate Champion Cow, three Junior Champion Heifers, and one Reserve Champion Heifer throughout the years. In breeding and caring for a complete herd, Top Acres was named the show’s Premier Exhibitor seven years and earned Premier Breeder at four shows. In addition, three different Top Acres bulls won Premier Sire Banners five times for having the offspring that made the deepest impact at the show. In 2017, the final elusive banner came home to hang in St Paris, Ohio, when Top Acres Supreme Wizard ET won Grand Champion at that year’s World Dairy Expo. In addition to Wizard, the most influential cows in Wayne’s life were: Jan’s Autumn Audrey, Kilravock Midnight Snow, Arnola Peggy Priscilla, Top Acres EJ Whizzbang, Top Acres Pre Bouquet, and Top Acres Coll Party who held the record for the breed’s top selling cow for well over a decade. The Top Acres cows also performed on the production side of the equation earning 12 National Performance Winner honors.
In addition to his legendary herd, Wayne became a sought-after sales manager when his Modern Associates business was born in 1970. Just like the dairy farm enterprise, Connie played an integral role clerking all the sales. It was during this business adventure that his grade school and high school classmate, and long-time friend, the late Palmer Hoffman routinely joined the sales crew leading cattle preparation. Eventually Modern Associates managed sales in 25 states and by 2008 had managed seven of the top ten auctions to that date.
With a keen eye for dairy cattle, Mr. Brown Swiss became a sought-after judge eventually judging six shows at World Dairy Expo in the Ayrshire, Brown Swiss and Holstein breeds. In addition, he judged a total of 40 national shows in North America throughout the years. Respected across the globe, Wayne went on to judge dairy cattle shows in numerous countries and he became known as “John Wayne” in Japan as he wore his legendary cowboy hat while judging in Asia.
Due to his deep dairy cattle resume and life’s work, Wayne won two of the highest honors in the North American dairy community. In 1986, his fellow peers elected him as the 45th Klussendorf Association winner for his character, sportsmanship, ability, and endeavor … the dairy industry’s equivalent to being inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. He later served a pair of two-year terms as the organization’s president.
A decade later, National Dairy Shrine inducted the Top Acres herd into its all-dairy breed Hall-of-Fame in Fort Atkinson, Wisconsin, as its 1998 Distinguished Cattle Breeder. In supporting the nomination, the Holstein breed’s legendary R. Peter Heffering from Hanover Hill Farms wrote, “Wayne is one of the finest showmen in the business and, most importantly, always conducts himself as a first-class gentleman. Wayne has accomplished all the goals one could expect to attain in a lifetime of working with cattle.”
A Celebration of Life service will be planned in the near future to commemorate Waynes’s life and legacy.

Connie Finton – April 9, 1947-April 9, 2025
Constance Eva “Connie” Finton, a dedicated community servant, dairy farmer, and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, passed away peacefully on her 78th birthday, April 9, 2025 following a period of declining health.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on April 9, 1947, to the late Charles Edgar and Eva Esther (Cannon) Wilson, Connie graduated from Boone High School in Orlando, Florida, and furthered her education at Orlando Junior College.
In 1966, while working at a department store, Connie met Charles Clifford “Cliff” Finton, who was stationed at the Naval Air Station Stanford in Florida. The two married on November 18, 1967. Although Connie originally envisioned a life of world travel with her sailor husband, she eventually embraced the life of a dairy farmer in New Philadelphia, and grew deeply devoted to it.
Her first visit to the dairy farm was memorable—she arrived wearing white jeans, unaware that this was the beginning of her life as a dairy farmer. She eventually managed 150 acres, milking a 100-cow herd twice a day, advocating for the dairy industry, and discussing agricultural matters with local CEOs.
Connie was widely respected in the community as both a skilled dairy farmer and a dedicated volunteer. She contributed her time to many organizations, including the Tuscarawas County Farm Bureau, Union Hospital Development and Community Relations board, the Tuscarawas County Job & Family Services advisory committee, the Got Milk? Got Cookies? Got Books? reading program, the Fit Youth Initiative, 4-H, and the Farm Bureau.
Additionally, she participated in national and state dairy farming organizations such as the Dairy Farmers of America Mideast Council, the Ohio Dairy Industry Forum, Ohio Dairy Producers Inc., ADADC Mideast, the Ohio Department of Agriculture Animal Health Committee, Milk Marketing Inc., and Maryland-Virginia Milk Co-op.
Connie found joy in combining her professional life as a dairy farmer with her leadership roles on various dairy boards, bringing innovative ideas back to Tuscarawas County to implement locally.
In 1993, Connie, along with members of the Union Hospital Auxiliary, founded the Christmas Tree Festival, an annual event she devoted countless hours to, which raised significant funds for the hospital. She also helped establish the Women’s Success Series, a partnership between the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum and Kent State University at Tuscarawas.
In 2008, Connie’s volunteer efforts were formally recognized when she received the Lucille Nussdorfer Tuscarawas County Woman of the Year Award. In 2016 she received the Tuscarawas County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award. Her faith was nurtured at Jerusalem Church and Ruslin Hills Church, where she taught Sunday School and was actively involved in Vacation Bible School.
Connie is survived by her husband, Cliff; children, Suzanne E. (companion, Mark Hundley) Loy, Charles C. “Charlie” (Lisa) Finton, and Matthew C. Finton; grandchildren, Jeff (Kimber) Loy and their daughter, Astrid, Chris (Nikki) Finton and their son Cayne, Kurt (Torree Corpman) Finton and his daughter Brynlee, and Brittany (fiancé, Brock Daugherty) Finton; siblings, Marilynn (Bill) Sellers and Charlene (Charlie) Hart; and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held in Jerusalem Church on Monday, April 14, 2025 beginning at 11 a.m. with Revs. Dr. Tom Hendershot and Dr. Terry Downin officiating. Inurnment will be held in Jerusalem Church Cemetery. Following the graveside service, friends and family are invited to the church fellowship hall for a time of food and fellowship.
Memorial contributions in Connie’s memory may be directed to either Jerusalem Church, 1417 Stonecreek Rd., New Philadelphia, OH 44663 or Ruslin Hills Church, 5839 Ruslin Hills Rd., Dover, OH 44622.
Connie’s favorite piece of advice was, “Keep out of other people’s business,” and she often said, “The best predictor of future behavior is past behavior.”

MARTIN “BUD” WESLEY YODER – March 8, 1975 – June 29, 2024
Martin Wesley Yoder was born to John Junior and Lois Marie Yoder on March 8, 1975. His father nicknamed Martin “Bud” as he was the youngest of 8 children. Bud grew up on a farm near West Salem, Ohio; he lived and breathed farm life, from the first word he learned to spell – CASE (tractor) – to joining the local Wayne County 4-H Program.
In High School, Bud played basketball and was an active member of the Northwestern FFA. He graduated from Northwestern High School in 1993. Following graduation, Bud attended Rosedale Bible Institute, where he enjoyed friendships, and participated in the RBI drama productions.
After RBI, Bud spent many years fitting cattle for shows and sales across the world in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Brazil.
Bud developed a special relationship with Jim and Nancy Kemp when he worked for them as their cattle herdsman. Later, he also worked for David Hershey in the same capacity. While Martin loved working with cattle, he found his next calling working alongside Roger Baker. After a long stint with Roger, who almost succeeded at turning him into a Hollywood star (hear the full story at the service), Bud’s desire to be his own boss led him to start a hoof trimming business which he successfully operated for eight years.
Bud always said he did not want to “just marry a woman he could live with,” but to “marry a woman he couldn’t live without.” When he found the woman he couldn’t live without, he promptly sold his thriving business, his house, and moved to Canada, to marry Sarah (Donaldson) on June, 28, 2014.
Bud and Sarah wasted no time starting a family. 9 months and 1 week after the wedding, they welcomed their daughter, Mikaela Joy Yoder on April 3, 2015. Bud started working on Sarah’s family’s farm. Bud quickly became the go to man. He took the role with a charismatic willingness. Soon after, Sarah and Bud, started their own farm, Golden Gate Farms. They built a state of the art Lely robotic milking and feeding system and were a model farm for many tours. Bud enjoyed having farmers from all over the world tour the farm and discuss old and progressive farming methods.
In 2018, Bud and Sarah welcomed their son, John Wesley Yoder to complete their family. Bud lived to farm, and enjoy the company of his family. He included his family in everything he did and wanted to pursue. He enjoyed family trips, side by side trips, traveling to Madison, Wisconsin for World Dairy Expo to exhibit his cows.
He was a true showman. Always displaying a true example to youth and fellow friends in his everyday actions.
Bud attended Bradner Presbyterian Church and was active in the ministry. He was a true shepard in how he lived. He lived by God’s word, and shared and taught his children all life’s lessons from its pages.
Bud was preceded in death by his father, John Junior Yoder (2014) and father-in-law Rob Donaldson (2022).
He leaves behind his loving wife of 10 years, Sarah Yoder and two children Mikaela Joy Yoder (9) and John Wesley Yoder (6). He is survived by his mother Lois Yoder, Wooster, OH; his siblings Linda (James) Nissley, Tuscon, AZ; Delbert (Heather) Yoder, West Salem, OH; Daniel Yoder, Apple Creek, OH; Glenda (Marvin) Zuercher, Wooster, OH; Myron Yoder, Centerville, OH; Anita (Ryan) Hostetler, Mechanicsburg, OH; Marla Yoder, Columbus, OH. PAUL E HARRIS – October 24, 1966 – June 4, 2024
Paul E. Harris, age 57, Bainbridge Twp, OH. He leaves behind his trusted partner in everything, beloved wife, Pam Krotzer. The son of Jennifer (Roddie) Hoffman and the late Ray E. Harris. Born and raised on the Howard Family Farm in Bainbridge Township, Paul spent his entire life striving to continue the legacy left by his parents and grandparents.
Vernon and Marion Howard, or as he called them Grandpa and Grandma, were his inspiration to lead a life dedicated to promoting agriculture and farming in Geauga County and beyond. Following in his father’s footsteps, Paul continued farming after earning a degree in Dairy Science from The Ohio State University. As a proud dairy farmer, maple producer, and owner/operator of Howard’s Apples, he loved sharing the history of one of Bainbridge Township’s founding families. He also proudly boasted of having the only rollercoaster in Geauga County. Paul could always be found on his tractor, in the fields, or with his cows.
If you knew Paul, you knew his two passions were dairy farming and The Great Geauga County Fair. He frequently boasted that he never missed a fair his entire life. In 1993, Paul succeeded Vernon Howard and became a Geauga County Agricultural Society Fairboard Director. From then until the day he took his last breath on June 4, 2024, Paul was driven to create an amazing fair experience for the community and beyond. In 2006, he was elected as Fairboard President. Always dedicated to doing the best job he could, Paul stepped up to be the Secretary of the Fair in 2008. Paul’s leadership extended statewide as he joined the Ohio Fair Managers Association and became the District 9 Director in 2008. He tirelessly advocated for the welfare of fairs across Ohio, working to update legislation and ensure fair funding and proper oversight. Paul recently completed his term as OFMA President in 2023.
To say he was a busy man was an understatement, but he was never too busy to visit with an old friend who dropped into the apple stand or the fair office. He loved telling stories and no matter how tired he was at the end of an exhausting day of running the farm and fair, you could find him in the Dairy Barn hanging out with his favorite people. The generosity Paul showed to both loved ones and strangers was truly remarkable. He was always the first to contribute to donations and took great joy in supporting the Junior Fair kids. There is nothing Paul loved more than his cows, the Parker kids and fairs.

TERRY RAWN – June 21, 1958-February 7, 2023
Terrence Eugene Rawn, age 64, passed away on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, surrounded by loved ones.
The oldest of seven kids, Terry grew up and worked on his family’s Registered Holstein and crop farm off Gender Road in Canal Winchester, Ohio. As an avid young 4-H member, Terry began the Rawn family’s legacy of participation in showing dairy cattle at local, state, and national levels. Terry’s participation in the home herd culminated in their June 17, 1981, herd dispersal. Terry began his college career at Ohio State before transferring to Virginia Tech where he was a member of the winning 1984 National Intercollegiate Dairy Cattle Judging Team. While attending Virginia Tech, Terry met his wife, Joy, of 37 years. Following his graduation in 1985, Terry worked in the artificial insemination business for twenty years where he worked as sire analyst and regional sales manager. Following that, Terry had the opportunity to manage several dairy farms across the United States and judge multiple dairy shows at all levels, including the National Jersey Jug.
Intertwined in his love and passion for dairy cattle, was a great love for people. Terry formed deep friendships wherever he went. He loved hearing people’s stories, learning who they were and from where they came. He would joke that he “only had three friends,” but he was beloved and held in close counsel by many.
One of Terry’s great passions was the development and mentorship of young people, and in his lifetime, he collected many mentees spanning across states and industries. From 2006 on, he had the pleasure to serve as an official at the World Dairy Expo Post-Secondary Judging Contest in Madison, Wisconsin, a responsibility that he greatly anticipated each year.
He was preceded in death by his dad, Dale Rawn. Terry is survived by his wife, Joy, and daughters, Rachel, Mary, and Annie, who he considered his greatest accomplishments, as well as son-in-laws Dylan and Ben, and his grandchildren Landon and Zoey, who, as he informed everyone, are “kind of a big deal.” Also, Chris Yohn, whom Terry loved like his own son, his wife Kate, and their three children Clayton, Avery, and Carter Terrence, who affectionately referred to Terry as “Crum,” and whom he often whisked away to eat ice cream and have adventures. Terry also leaves behind his mom Barbara Rawn, who he called weekly and loved to make laugh, as well as his six siblings, Tom (Donna) Rawn, Tonya (Lloyd) Marshall, Tamie Rawn, Tricia (Derron) Dulkoski, Tina (Barb) Harrison-Rawn, and Tim Rawn, and many beloved nieces and nephews, Jenna (Nick), Justin, Kelly (Brennan), Trevor, Connor, Travis, Tori, and Kaiden, whose sporting events, award ceremonies, and graduation parties he frequented as often as he could.
A service will be held in Terry’s honor on Saturday, February 11, at 11 a.m. at Second Baptist Church – South Campus (12008 Shadow Creek Pkwy, Pearland, TX 77584). On Friday, March 10, friends and family are invited to visit from 4-7 p.m. at the Canal Winchester High School, (300 Washington, St, Canal Winchester, OH 43110) with a celebration of life at 5:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts in Terry’s honor can be made to Second Baptist School Foundation (6410 Woodway Drive, Houston, TX 77057) or the Canal Winchester High School Athletic Hall of Fame (300 Washington, St, Canal Winchester, OH 43110).
