Ohio Holstein Breeder Tour

Ohio Holstein breeders enjoyed a beautiful, warm sunny Saturday at the Ohio Holstein Breeder Tour, hosted by Velvet-View Farms in Big Prairie, Ohio. The Schlauch family operates a smaller, high type, show cow operation and process their own yogurt and ice cream, which were available for the visitors as part of a delicious lunch! They also have an IVF facility newly incorporated in the operation.

The guest speaker was Emily Mullen of The Mullen Dairy and Creamy in Okeana, Ohio. She spoke of the innovations she implemented on her family’s generational dairy farm to keep the operations going in current times.

Enjoy the pictures below and thank you to all who came out and supported Velvet-View Farms and the Ohio Holstein Association.

Ohio Juniors represent well at National Convention

As the dust settles on the 2024 National Holstein Convention, let’s take a moment to reflect on the outstanding Ohio juniors.
Fourteen juniors competed in dairy bowl, dairy jeopardy, prepared public speaking, folding display, digital scrapbook, and banner.
🥈 Lydia Kaverman’s folding display on investigating milk fluidity as a marker for mastitis placed second in the scientific intermediate division.
🥉Aubree Topp’s folding display on gestation entitled “Bun in the Oven” placed third in the creative intermediate division.
🥉Carissa Pittman and Audrey Sidle created the digital scrapbook that placed third.
🥉Aubree Topp led the juniors in creating the state banner that placed third.
THANK YOU for everyone’s support on this journey! These juniors put hours into preparing for convention and their efforts were rewarded.
Thank you to the parents, Ohio Holstein Board, volunteers, coaches, and supporters that helped make this happen! We will see everyone next year in the “Show-Me State” of Missouri!
O-H!!!

Martin “Bud” Yoder Obituary

Martin “Bud” Wesley YoderMARCH 8, 1975 – JUNE 29, 2024

Martin Wesley Yoder was born to John Junior and Lois Marie Yoder on March 8, 1975. His father nicknamed Martin “Bud” as he was the youngest of 8 children. Bud grew up on a farm near West Salem, Ohio; he lived and breathed farm life, from the first word he learned to spell – CASE (tractor) – to joining the local Wayne County 4-H Program.

In High School, Bud played basketball and was an active member of the Northwestern FFA. He graduated from Northwestern High School in 1993. Following graduation, Bud attended Rosedale Bible Institute, where he enjoyed friendships, and participated in the RBI drama productions.

After RBI, Bud spent many years fitting cattle for shows and sales across the world in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Brazil.

Bud developed a special relationship with Jim and Nancy Kemp when he worked for them as their cattle herdsman. Later, he also worked for David Hershey in the same capacity. While Martin loved working with cattle, he found his next calling working alongside Roger Baker. After a long stint with Roger, who almost succeeded at turning him into a Hollywood star (hear the full story at the service), Bud’s desire to be his own boss led him to start a hoof trimming business which he successfully operated for eight years.

Bud always said he did not want to “just marry a woman he could live with,” but to “marry a woman he couldn’t live without.” When he found the woman he couldn’t live without, he promptly sold his thriving business, his house, and moved to Canada, to marry Sarah (Donaldson) on June, 28, 2014.

Bud and Sarah wasted no time starting a family. 9 months and 1 week after the wedding, they welcomed their daughter, Mikaela Joy Yoder on April 3, 2015. Bud started working on Sarah’s family’s farm. Bud quickly became the go to man. He took the role with a charismatic willingness. Soon after, Sarah and Bud, started their own farm, Golden Gate Farms. They built a state of the art Lely robotic milking and feeding system and were a model farm for many tours. Bud enjoyed having farmers from all over the world tour the farm and discuss old and progressive farming methods.

In 2018, Bud and Sarah welcomed their son, John Wesley Yoder to complete their family. Bud lived to farm, and enjoy the company of his family. He included his family in everything he did and wanted to pursue. He enjoyed family trips, side by side trips, traveling to Madison, Wisconsin for World Dairy Expo to exhibit his cows.

He was a true showman. Always displaying a true example to youth and fellow friends in his everyday actions.

Bud attended Bradner Presbyterian Church and was active in the ministry. He was a true shepard in how he lived. He lived by God’s word, and shared and taught his children all life’s lessons from its pages.

Bud was preceded in death by his father, John Junior Yoder (2014) and father-in-law Rob Donaldson (2022).

He leaves behind his loving wife of 10 years, Sarah Yoder and two children Mikaela Joy Yoder (9) and John Wesley Yoder (6). He is survived by his mother Lois Yoder, Wooster, OH; his siblings Linda (James) Nissley, Tuscon, AZ; Delbert (Heather) Yoder, West Salem, OH; Daniel Yoder, Apple Creek, OH; Glenda (Marvin) Zuercher, Wooster, OH; Myron Yoder, Centerville, OH; Anita (Ryan) Hostetler, Mechanicsburg, OH; Marla Yoder, Columbus, OH. Bud will also be greatly missed by his many nephews and nieces. He always had a way of making each one feel like they were his favorite.

There will be a Tribute to Buds Life in Bradner, BC and another in Wooster, Ohio. See details below.

Date: Thursday, August 22, 2024
Time: 2:00 p.m
Location: Bradner Community Hall (5305 Bradner Rd, Abbotsford, BC, V4X 2P1)
The family extends an invitation to everyone that knew or called Bud a friend. There will be an pportunity to share a memory or how Bud impacted your life. Refreshments to follow.

Date: Sunday, September 22, 2024
Time: 2:00 p.m
Location: Roger Baker’s Farm (6609 Ashland Road, Wooster, OH 44691).
A tribute, followed by a time of visitation and a meal provided by farmers and friends of the agricultural community that loved Bud. If you knew, Bud, please plan to attend and share your memories with family and friends in private conversation or at the open mic during the meal. There will also be a Keepsake Box for you to share a written memory of Bud with his children that they can enjoy for years to come.

Earlier Note from wife, Sarah Yoder: Bud took his last breathe of life on earth yesterday, as I held his hand.

It wasn’t the victory I expected, believed, or wished for. But deliverance was granted. Bud overcame so many obstacles and fought so hard to return to his family. But the victory was, is, and always will be Jesus.

Bud was thee most precious husband, father and friend to so many. He was a true Shepherd in everything he did and to everyone he met.

A service will be held in Bradner and in Ohio at a date to be announced at the end of summer.
